Better Times

Pretty crazy: a timelapse + lip-sync video all while growing a beard in between:

Timelapse animation music video, with my beard growing through Covid lockdown. Using my face as a stop-motion puppet (a technique called pixilation), I took 2,117 individual photos, every night, over 101 days, and synchronized the actions to the song “Better Days” by Radical Face.

A ton of planning and work went into that video, as talked about in this behind the scenes:

“Crowded Fields” – The Brilliant and Absurd Time-Lapse Photography of Pelle Cass

I like these photos by Pelle Cass, in which he composes several of the same shots on top of each-other.

The contrast between the crowded fields (the name of this series) and the empty stands make this great.

Create a timelapse of your web development with tlapse

This one’s quite fun: tlapse is a tiny utility that takes periodic screenshots of your site while you develop. Combine all generated screenshots and you can get a sequence like this:

The interval to take screenshots is configurable, and duplicates are omitted.

tlapse --every 60s --directory ./screens -- localhost:3000

Fire Chasers

Preview of an upcoming documentary:

US wildfires burned 10 million acres in the US last year exceeding six billion dollars in costs, making it the most destructive annual natural disaster in the world. Fire Chasers plunges deeper into California wildfires than ever before with unprecedented access granted by CalFire and the breathtaking imagery of acclaimed film and photo artist, Jeff Frost. This visually groundbreaking project follows the intersecting lives of firefighters and those who record their fury; an epic adventure film with a vital message.

The Technology behind Hyperlapse from Instagram

Hyperlapses are a special kind of time lapse where the camera is also moving. Capturing hyperlapses has traditionally been a laborious process that involves meticulous planning, a variety of camera mounts and professional video editing software. With Hyperlapse, our goal was to simplify this process. We landed on a single record button and a post-capture screen where you select the playback rate. To achieve fluid camera motion we incorporated a video stabilization algorithm called Cinema (which is already used in Video on Instagram) into Hyperlapse.

Hitchcock’s Rear Window Timelapse

I dissected all of Hitchcock’s Rear Window and stiched it back together in After Effects. I stabilized all the shots with camera movement in them. Since everything was filmed from pretty much the same angle I was able to match them into a single panoramic view of the entire backyard without any greater distortions. The order of events stays true to the movie’s plot.”
